Walleyes, Walleyes and More Walleyes

This year has been one for the record books!  Its no secret that walleyes are biting on Lake Winnebago.....Trolling out in the mud flats just about anywhere on the lake is producing great numbers of fish a lot of people.  When the wind blows guys are getting tons of fish on the rocky shorelines and on the reefs on botht the East side and West side of the lake.  With summer finally showing its face with warmer temperatures, the water has finally turned green due to the annual algae bloom.  Water conditions still remain very clear for this system and I have a feeling it is a sign of whats to come in the upcoming years.  The zebra muscles have done a very good job of cleaning up the lakes maybe a little too good!  Finding dirty water to fish is getting kind of difficult.  The one thing I always tell guys to to look for the carp and follow them.  The carp will turn up the water around them which will draw the walleyes in.  Fishing the weeds around rolling carp has been very productive the past couple of weeks.  With the rising water temperatures, try fishing the shallow weeds early in the morning before the sun comes up and after a few degree temperature change head a little deeper.  Dont be affraid to go very shallow, I have caught many fish in a foot of water while the tops of their backs stick out of the water.  Keep quiet, stay small and watch your line...dont wait to feel the bite.  By the time you feel it, they are already spitting it out.

Up on the upper lakes, the colder water out in the horseshoe is holding a bunch of fish along witht the deep water at the mouth of the river.  Trolling crawler harnesses or salmos is still the ticket up there.  25-40 feet back over the horseshoe should get you a few fish.  There are also a few stragglers hanging around the bridge in Winneconne.

Panfish action will start to heat up with the warming water throughout the system.  Right now the best bluegill action is on the upper lakes around the cane beds early in the morning or jsut before dark.  Small popper on flyrods or in front of a casting bubble are working the best.  Small panfish leeches on rat finkees below small floats are also working very well.

Any questions on techniques or whats been working give me a shout.

Until next time.

Tight Lines!
